Honestly, it’s tough to put a strong opinion on this right now. Also, keep in mind the new 3300X chip is 60 USD less and outperforms Intel’s 7700K (which was their top gaming CPU three years back). It’s surprising how good it is. You might want to look at Linux’s review—it compares it to other Ryzen models.

They're expected to operate at 5nm scale.

You're correct about the 4000 series being built on 7nm+ technology. The rumor about Zen 4 being at 5nm is accurate, but the 4000 series uses Zen 3 architecture.

You're asking about the nature of your work. Are you referring to office tasks, CAD, MATLAB, video editing, rendering, programming, or something else? If you meant only gaming without content creation, I'd suggest moving from the 3700X to the 3600.

Absolutely, that's correct—I was considering Zen 4.

Near the end of the cpu cycle AMD will discount their chips to move more inventory. The 300 series CPUs are selling well below their MSRP right now so you’re not getting ripped off by getting one. Let’s say ryzen 4000 launches in 2 months. The 4700x will likely come in at $350 while the 3700x is going for around $270 right now. The 4000 series will likely modestly improve gaming performance at 1080p, but 1440p is fairly cpu bottlenecked. In my opinion it is not really worth waiting for the 4000 series with your usecase. As long as you get an x570 or B550 (when it comes out) you can upgrade to the 4000 series when your 3600 or 3700x slows down.
