6800k isn't soldered, it's just a bigger heat spreader to keep things cooler. Overall @zindan the 8700k is the better CPU, though not cheap. I'd pick the 5930k if you can locate one with similar specs to the 6800k, otherwise stick with the 6800k if you find a good X99 board and enough RAM.

The i7 6800K offers more direct CPU PCIe lanes, though the platform is limited with only 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes. The 8700K runs on Z370, which provides 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes. In summary: i7 6800K has 28 CPU PCIe lanes plus 8 PCIe 2.0 from the chipset, while the 8700K boasts 16 CPU PCIe lanes and 24 PCIe 3.0 from its chipset. Neither supports x16 on the GPU, so the advantage isn't clear. For dual GPUs, it doesn't matter which lanes come from the CPU or chipset, making the 8700K's setup even more beneficial. If you're targeting x99, consider moving to i7 6850K and above. That's when Intel really pushed the boundaries with 40 PCIe lanes on a 6-core processor.

I took that into consideration, but the limited bandwidth in the chipset lanes didn’t significantly affect my view. With an i7 6850k, the comparison would look much more impressive.

I own a 6800k but suggest going with the 8700k. It offers a better CPU and future upgrades are easier on x99 boards. The price gap is huge—where I live they’re similar, but the 8700k costs $30 more.
