I chose to replace my Ryzen 7 2700X with a newer model and wanted to understand the main differences between the Ryzen 5 3600X and 7 3700X. My setup is an Asus B450F Strix with the latest BIOS, 2060 Super, 32 GB RAM at 3000 MHz, and DDR4. I’ll be playing 1440p gaming, mainly Monster Hunter World at 60fps.

For gaming you don't require eight cores; the 3600 will suffice.

you aren't going to get a performance jump at 1440p 60 save for a new GPU when they come out in the fall. read though and you'll see no need to change. Edited April 27, 2020 by GDRRiley

Only playing games matters, the visuals at 3600x to 3700x won’t make much difference. This upgrade doesn’t seem worthwhile, a full generation upgrade won’t deliver big gains. I’d hold off until the next one. Have you updated your CPU? If not, you could improve performance by upgrading memory too.

Not really for 1440p at 60fps, 2700x won’t be any faster than a third-generation setup since your GPU is already limited.

Not always accurate, in numerous games irrespective of GPU performance, a drop in FPS usually stems from CPU limitations. A quicker CPU can help maintain stable frame rates during low performance. Take most MMOs as an example. The situation often varies depending on the games you play. Monster Hunter World fits this pattern.

I recall before version 8.1 in WoW, the gap between my 8700k and 1600 was significant. In the general world, it didn<|pad|>'s choice didn't really matter, but during raids, the 1600 would be overwhelmed in the 30s and 40s while my 8700k could maintain around 60fps, though even at 5ghz it sometimes dropped below that. Both GPUs were underused in raids. The difference between 110 and 130fps in the world isn't crucial. A 30 vs 60 ratio during a raid definitely counts.

The adjustment here doesn't affect the CPU performance. Be aware that anything above 2666MHz on most AM4 boards is treated as memory overclocking, which can lead to varying results even if the rated speeds are used. It's best to manually adjust your memory settings. For stability, follow these steps: keep Asus’s EZ-Tuning Utility at ‘Normal’ mode, in Extreme Tweaker enable all CPU settings to Auto, set RAM to its specified speed (for example, a 3200MHz kit should stay at 3200MHz), configure DRAM Voltage to 1.3500V, and run stress tests such as Cinebench R20 or 3Dmark to verify stability. If you encounter crashes and a blue screen with Windows error code, restart into BIOS and gradually increase voltage by 0.025V up to a maximum of 1.4500V until the issue resolves.
