I'm evaluating options to upgrade my Mobo from B450 to B550 or X570 for my 5950X CPU. After reviewing videos, reviews, and specs, I'm unsure which option is better. Right now I'm running the CPU for mining RTM with a dual-channel setup of two RTX 2080 Super graphics, using 16GB RAM. I'm curious about performance differences between B550 and X570 for gaming and occasional video/photo work.
B550 offers budget-friendly performance with solid features for everyday users.
X570 comes with a premium build and advanced capabilities, targeting more experienced or demanding customers.
B550 stands out on many boards as being more premium than earlier B series models. Since its launch, people have realized that opting for higher-end B550 boards usually means adding more than one PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot—something that now isn’t as crucial. Avoid getting caught up in hype just because a product claims X570; not all X570 boards are top quality. Also, unless you choose X570S, you might face noisy chipset fans while B550 and X570S use passive cooling. Depending on your needs, there’s no strong reason to need an X570 unless you plan for future upgrades like XOC. Many B550 boards can handle a 5950x setup easily.
I don’t think I’ll change the CPU much, and it seems likely the X570 won’t support Ryzen Gen4 while B550 will. You’re planning to stay put on this for a while—probably another three years or more. You’re considering an Asus Mobo, aiming for a premium build, with a budget around £250, possibly reaching up to £450 if you’re willing to take risks.
Currently, all AM4-based systems are reaching their limit. We'll receive updated Zen 3 chips next year, but after that it will switch to Zen 4 in a completely different socket (AM5). Unless you intend to upgrade within the next three years, this likely isn't something you should be concerned about.
