I don’t have the exact numbers right now, but it looks like AMD should have made progress with Zen 2, which likely puts them ahead of Intel in gaming performance. You can't really compare Intel and AMD for next-gen games until they both have solid releases.

Based on the current setup, overclocking appears feasible. I’d review components like VRM cooling before purchasing any B450 motherboard, even though it allows overclocking.

It comes down to what matters most to you. The cost of getting a compatible kit adds up, especially with the socket changes. I prefer working with physical pin sets rather than on-chip solutions. Since I have access to a micro center nearby, the price gap between the i7 and 3700X isn’t huge, but I still get better performance from the i7. It’s about why people prioritize gaming over production builds—especially when it comes to high frame rates. If companies like Nvidia released more PCIe 4 cards, maybe that would shift the trend. But right now, I feel more drawn to Ryzen for its performance and value.

Secure a good offer on the 9700K and consider it if you're close to a server farm. It remains the top choice for gaming CPUs even with a minor discount.

I'm waiting on the 10 series to release because the i7 is getting hyper threading again so it will be 8 cores 16 threads much like the 9900k but at i7 money unless microcenter puts the i9 at a high discount id go with the next series.
