That's correct, you could opt for a lower series board but you miss out on PCIe 4.0. Thinking about an i7 build, the main reason to switch to AMD would be either increasing frame counts beyond what i7 offers or adopting PCIe 4.0.
For a 2070S/5700XT or faster GPU at 1080p, choose Intel if you need top performance. If you prefer power efficiency, AMD offers comparable results with lower energy use. PCIe 4 won’t force a switch in CPU choice. With Zen 3, AMD is likely to match Intel’s speed, making it compatible with existing motherboards.

It hasn't shifted my perspective much and hasn't surpassed Intel yet. The cost gap between the motherboard and CPU isn't enough to tip me toward AMD. Plus, those CPU choices are still disappointing, and I'm eyeing a fresh Noctua adapter.
