Hi, I was considering using my old laptop as a dedicated server host. I wanted to connect it via Ethernet and run games like Minecraft and GMod for myself and friends. After upgrading to Windows 10, it works fine, but I’m curious if switching to Ubuntu Linux 16.04 would improve its performance as a dedicated server. Thanks, jtpjr

It's worth checking out CentOS 7—it's free and among the most widely used server operating systems. https://www.centos.org/

CentOS is aimed at beginners. It's preferable to use Ubuntu or Debian depending on your needs. I've tried Minecraft on Linux and Windows, and Linux has always seemed like a better option. I'd suggest Ubuntu 14.04 and Mark2 for your server setup.

The desktop edition of Windows isn't suited for servers due to the numerous background processes it executes, which can harm performance, stability, and security.

It makes sense that I considered Ubuntu. My main worry is handling the valve servers since they run on Linux rather than Windows, though I’m confident it won’t be too challenging. Also, Windows tends to make my laptop fan speed drop dramatically every few minutes.

I’m familiar with Ubuntu, though I’m not very skilled. I’m hoping this will be a good learning experience for both of us, since I plan to create a dedicated server later. It’s a great beginning!

Well valve had been encouraging Linux a while back, which means their games are compatible and setup is straightforward. Probably because I haven<|pad|> can have tried it myself. Also, consider checking the Ubuntu server release if you're sure your system will perform well.

Cool, then that really shouldn't be too hard. IMO, Windows for this laptop is a bit of a waste, my only problem with doing this is driver support, as this is a windows laptop from about 7-8 years ago.
