I wouldn't choose standard Ubuntu because the Unity interface uses a lot of memory. I prefer alternatives like Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Debian could be better, but it isn't very beginner-friendly right out of the box.

Distros based on Ubuntu tend to be more user-friendly, offering a built-in package manager that makes it simple to connect with third-party PPA sources. For instance, if you require Oracle Java, you can easily install it directly from the terminal or through the GUI package manager by linking the Java WebUpdate PPA on Ubuntu-based systems. On Debian, this process will be a bit more difficult.
