Checked all possible fixes and found severe FPS drops plus microstutters. Tried everything I could think of.
Hey there, I recently assembled a new PC a few months back, and since then I’ve faced some annoying performance swings while gaming. I often experience sudden drops in frames per second—sometimes plummeting to just 4–10 FPS—and other times seeing wild spikes up to thousands of FPS, like 9999. These extreme numbers are the low FPS readings that create noticeable stuttering, making gameplay feel sluggish and unpredictable. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it tends to last for a session and can repeat. I’ve attached a photo showing the 9999 lows; I haven’t captured the actual very low frames yet, but the effect is clear.
Original specs: CPU – Ryzen 9 9900X (now upgraded), GPU – RTX 5080, RAM – 32GB DDR5-6000 Corsair Vengeance (upgraded), Motherboard – MSI MEG X670 ACE, PSU – NZXT C1200, Storage – two 250GB Samsung SSDs, one 16TB WD Black SN770 (1TB & 2TB), WD Black SN850X 2TB.
What I’ve tried: Switched to a Ryzen 9 9950X3D for a week, then upgraded RAM to 64GB DDR5-6000 G.Skill Neo (both times). Disabled HDCP and MPO, turned off undervolting, removed all GPU overclocks, reset context memory, checked the 12VHPWR connection, monitored with HWINFO—no throttling detected. GPU temps stay around 55°C max. BIOS is up to date. Removed unnecessary drives except the boot drive, expanded the page file, reinstalled Windows.
Details: The problem is completely random. Sometimes the system runs smoothly for hours or days, then it crashes. Once it starts during a session, it usually stays or gets worse. I think the GPU might be involved, but I can’t confirm because it’s not consistent or easy to reproduce. At this point, I feel like I’ve tried most solutions and would really appreciate any tips or troubleshooting steps I might have missed. If anyone has faced something similar or has suggestions, I’d be grateful. Thanks ahead! P.S. Sorry if this needs a different forum. New here on the site.
I also attempted to use Expo but didn't remember this—I'm sorry about that.
No reinstallation was performed. The installation appears to be a fresh setup.
I set up a brand new PC with a fresh Windows install, but after moving from the 9900x to the 9950x3d, the same problem occurred. It happened with my previous Intel setup, so I realized I’d have to reinstall everything again.
