Connecting your home router to a switch over a 10GB Ethernet cable could noticeably boost uploads and downloads via Wi-Fi to your NAS, especially if it supports multiple connections. Video streaming from a Plex server might also see improvement. Given the current usage of only a few people, there’s likely not enough congestion to warrant investing in more ports for additional links.

Your Wi-Fi might be restricted, not just due to speed limits. To notice a difference, you’d need over 20 streams on Plex with a 1GbE connection. A 10GbE wouldn’t make much of a difference in this case. What’s your current usage on the 1GbE link?

I don’t have a precise method for tracking usage, but in the router’s bandwidth monitoring I estimate about 5–10GB per hour for downloads from both WAN and Ethernet. Overall, it’s significantly less for internal LAN connections.

Check if your internet speed exceeds 1GbE; this applies to LAN transfers too. Ensure the operating system displays transfer statistics on the network connection.
