I purchased a budget 50-meter cable labeled Cat5e online. It’s blue, which differs from the brown cables my alarms use. I plan to buy another from the same brand to identify pin colors in the RJ45 connector. Thanks for your assistance! Updated: I won’t be using this one; instead, I’ll run a new cable through the wall. The house isn’t finished yet, so it should be easy.
People often purchase cables that appear to follow basic color codes even if they aren’t true CAT standards, hoping the colors match expectations. The wiring might still be twisted pair, but the gauge, resistance, or capacitance could differ from what’s recommended.
Agreed - the maker completely misrepresented the product they offered. It's essentially a "fake" Cat5e cable. It may function slightly, but it doesn't meet any official standards. Discard that cable and avoid using it again. I'd also remove the first one (possibly repurpose it if feasible) and install just one properly sized new cable for the task.
I've tried using a similar pre-made cable before without any problems, but for custom runs it doesn't make sense to use non-standard options. It increases the chance of termination mistakes, since we can't really be sure the cable was set up properly initially.
