I own a video editing PC roughly nine years old and want to upgrade it so I can learn Unreal Engine and play VR games. I’m new to Unreal, so I need the best setup to run all its features smoothly, test different functionalities, and create VR environments. I’d like to ensure my VR headset works well with high graphics settings of at least 2K resolution. I understand the graphics card is the main factor, but I’m curious whether my current CPU can handle UE5 without issues. If upgrading is necessary, what would be the most affordable option?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
A lot has changed since 9 years and I doubt your PSU is up to par to power what's available since 2020. You would most likely need to change the PSU while you're swapping the GPU out. Ideally you should look into a new platform, so your system is balanced.
Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model.

Your question about the budget is understandable, but it seems you're seeking clarity on whether a 600-800 range is feasible for your project. Let's explore this together.

What is the speed of the RAM? It seems possible to fit an Intel 12th Gen CPU like the i5 12400 on a budget board. Interestingly, some z690 boards from the previous generation are reasonably priced and can support up to the 14th generation. Certain models may also support DDR4, which could help reduce the cost of the RAM package.

the ram is 2133 MHz i believe. it comes with a full-size ATX case but it looks quite worn out, so i'm looking for an option with a more compact design.

for my 2 cents, i suggest a base upgrade plus a gpu. look for a refurbished workstation with a better cpu, and get a new video card with the remaining budget. i think it’s worth it to spend a bit more for a tower model, giving you more space. you might need to purchase a secondary psu and connect it to power the gpu. trust me, it’s worth the effort.

That's a great idea actually thank you... any suggestions then on what I can do with the PC I have now?... It still runs really well for what it is... it was worth about 1200 when I built it 9 years ago... maybe I could sell it for 150-200? or can I convert it to something else?

You can also determine the cost of constructing something. With a good PSU, you might be able to repurpose the 980ti and upgrade it later.

It's not impossible. Keep in mind that compact designs and specialized gear come at a higher price. The main challenge is locating components that fit your current generation. These items will require investment. More advanced technology delivers significantly better results and offers a longer lifespan. You may need to make some adjustments with a limited budget, but it's achievable. Where are you purchasing from? the US?
