The original base is really great, especially if you manage to get a discount. If not, there could be alternative options from other brands that offer comparable results at a lower cost.

Can the 980 Ti maintain performance for most games at 1080p high settings, similar to non-AAA titles, and will it support most UE5 features smoothly enough for learning purposes? At least at a level sufficient for basic gameplay?

These questions are tough to address. It really depends on the game, as both GPU and CPU models vary widely. At 1080p and lower resolutions, CPUs often struggle to match the performance of GPUs, but if the GPU is also outdated, the differences might not be too significant. A recent video reviewing several modern AAA titles with various GPUs (using current CPUs and RAM) could illustrate the large gap we've seen over the past nine years.
