I recently configured a steam cache but encountered performance challenges. My setup includes a gigabit network, two striped HDDs, four CPU cores allocated to the VM, and 3GB of RAM. Despite these resources, I’m only achieving around 25 Mbps, which feels quite limited. I’m uncertain if my cache configuration is correct, especially since I’m new to virtual machines and caching. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The vm is used for disk, CPU, and I/O monitoring. You can run iostat to check performance metrics.

Determine how to execute the program. You notice around 20% utilization across 2-3 cores, with the CPU package maintaining roughly 50% load even when other VMs run and a game is in cache. The raid 0 speeds show reads at 200MB/s and writes at 175MB/s on average.

Open the terminal and execute I/O statistics. Which operating system are you running?

The virtual machine is running on Linux. The host is Ubuntu Server, and it's using a VMware hostMX hypervisor.

Check the hypervisor version using commands like 'systemctl list-hypervisors' or 'which hv' depending on your setup.

The VM operates within a specific program environment. Yes, you can execute iostat on Ubuntu to monitor system performance.

Operating in VMware Workstation Pro, the system is fully current with all latest updates. I checked iostat and received the following metrics: Linux 5.8.0-48-generic (ubuntu) 04/11/2021 _x86_64 (4 CPU). Average CPU usage: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 6.45 0.01 2.70 0.41 0.00 90.43 Device throughput: kB_read/s kB_wrtn/s kB_dscd/s kB_read kB_wrtn kB_dscd loop0 0.00 0.05 0.00 0.00 6934 0 0 Loop1 0.01 0.07 0.00 0.00 10193 0 0 Loop10 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 347 0 0 Loop11 0.00 0.01 0.00 0.00 1103 0 0 Loop12 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 18 0 0 Loop2 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 347 0 0 Loop3 0.00 0.01 0.00 0.00 1091 0 0 Loop4 0.01 0.03 0.00 0.00 5090 0 0 Loop5 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 133 0 0 Loop6 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 226 0 0 Loop7 0.01 0.12 0.00 0.00 18412 0 0 Loop8 0.00 0.01 0.00 0.00 1090 0 0 Loop9 0.01 0.17 0.00 0.00 26367 0 0 SDA 3.17 81.57 145.22 0.00 12505334 22263461 0 SCSD0 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.00 2 0 0

Is this using a tool to fetch from the cache? VMware Workstation might not be ideal for IO tasks, while Hyper-V could be a better option since it's a Type 1 hypervisor.
