I set up my own setup at the start of the pandemic with the following components:
AMD Ryzen 7 3rd Gen - RYZEN 7 3700X
GIGABYTE B550 AORUS PRO AC
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB 3600 MHz)

It worked well for me, though I’m not a heavy gamer—just occasionally play GTAO at max settings (around 144 fps at 1440p). The system still handles music and video tasks smoothly, and I have no need to upgrade right now. I believe my PC can likely run most games comfortably.
A family member is planning an upgrade from an ASUS TUF FX505DT to a budget desktop, and I’m trying to decide whether to build something similar or stick with entry-level AM5. With the availability of AM5, I don’t feel it’s necessary for performance compared to cost.
I’m not as enthusiastic about overbuilding as I used to be, so I wanted your advice on the best path forward.
What activities does your family member plan for the PC that you could pass on or create? That will influence whether you should develop something comparable, though a 5000 series Ryzen would make good progress with the B550 chipset. Besides the rig's purpose and its intended use, how much is your family member willing to invest in building it?
What additional expenses would be involved in constructing an AM5-based system?

When purchasing new, opt for the latest generation. With AMD, you achieve superior single-thread performance. This improves desktop responsiveness and enhances gaming experience. A R5-7600 should cost under $200. Execute the cpu-Z benchmark on your 3700X. Expect a score of 5445 with a single-thread rating of 528. The 7600 will achieve 5659 and a single-thread score of 692. The current graphics card is GTX1650. Consider upgrading or you might be let down. Ensure at least one tier above the recommended level in tom's GPU hierarchy list: Keep in mind that mobile chips lag behind their discrete versions. A RX6600 is a solid choice.
Reflecting on this in real terms, will the changes really stand out? There are far superior AM4 Zen3 chips compared to my 3700x. That’s why I’m asking. It seems like what I’m hearing is that if I upgraded my machine, I could technically just install a C(G)PU upgrade, but since I’m building from scratch, it makes more sense to go with the AM5 path.
For running fully loaded batch applications, the 7600 will match your 3700x. However, for desktop speed and gaming, the more powerful single-threaded performance of the 7600 will stand out. I believe you didn’t need to upgrade; you were seeking a build suitable for a family member. If the goal is to provide him with your existing PC, that’s a different situation.
