Bethesda announces a legal name change for the Fortress Fallout game.
Bethesda is pushing indie creator Jordan Maron to rename his project "Fortress Fallout."
It comes from Bethesda's parent company, Zenimax. Both sides have valid points here. Fallout is a well-known title, yet when I first encountered Fortress Fallout, I imagined it as a mod or an unofficial version. There’s a debate about whether people associate it with the original Fallout games.
It's similar to the reaction people had when Notch released the "Scrolls" game.
It seems Zenimax is turning minor concerns into significant issues once more. Hate them.
Bethesda secured nearly 6 million USD for the exclusive Fallout brand from Interplay around 2007. It makes sense that their parent company wanted to safeguard that investment, but in this case, I don’t think "Fortress Fallout" will lose any sales to Bethesda or Zenimax. It feels a bit odd.
They still believe the price was too high for that arrangement, the original Fallouts setting was decent but not a must-have hit or trend. It’s hard to ignore how they might have borrowed ideas from Interplay’s earlier work—taking elements from Wasteland and rebranding them differently.
I understand your perspective. Fallout has always held a special place for me. It was the first game I saw someone play on a PC, and experiencing FO 1&2 recently was truly rewarding. I believe the franchise should keep growing, even if some see it as trivial. Personally, the name "Fallout" adds a certain significance, regardless of how much influence it might have. Describing Fallout 4 as "Wasted Land" feels inadequate. With both NVD and FO3 receiving special editions, it seems reasonable that there’s ongoing debate over the branding. I think the popularity of those titles makes the name more valuable than Bethesda acquired it nearly a decade ago. I wonder if they should safeguard the name now that its worth has increased so much. Still, it feels excessive.
