Best OS to run on this PC
I’d install a stick of RAM on my older Phenom 2, giving it 2 gigabytes. This was done to experiment with higher voltage memory settings and overclocking. Windows 10 64-bit works perfectly with 2 gigabytes of RAM. I’ve tried both Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10 64-bit, and everything ran smoothly. Note: I meant to keep this as one post, not split into two. Whoops.
I usually choose 64-bit for compatibility, since 32-bit systems might not run all 64-bit programs.
Hey team! Planning to reinstall Windows 7 32-bit because I really like its old-school interface. I also gave 64-bit a shot, but it consumed about 30% more memory when idle compared to 32-bit. That’s why I’m sticking with the 32-bit version.
I finally got my dad to boost his RAM. But the motherboard only supports up to 4GB, so we’re limited there. That’s why I’m moving to a 64-bit setup now. Thanks!
I believe you're already leaning toward Windows 10. Based on what I've noticed, not on strict tests but on how my old Dell mini desktop (similar specs) and my sister's perform, Windows 10 feels quicker and boots more smoothly. Compared to Windows 7, it's snappier and faster. Also, 64-bit systems tend to use more RAM—this is something I've only recently learned about.
Windows 10 doesn't offer a significant speed boost over Windows 7 or 8. Performance comparisons show that Windows 7 and 8 tend to run smoother compared to Windows 10. Gaming performance also varies, with older systems often lagging behind newer ones. The shift from an OS filled with installed applications to a clean install can improve responsiveness. A 64-bit operating system generally consumes more RAM, typically using 200–500 MB more than a 32-bit version when idle.
