If you were hoping for something new, unexpected or beyond your expectations, this isn’t the place for it. But now that we’re clear on that, let’s focus on the essentials. Here’s my honest take on Battlefield 4 after 18 months. Honestly, I didn’t buy it much, but it was compatible with my R9 290, so I guess I invested. I also added BF4 Premium for €50, a decision I’ll later wish I hadn’t made.

The positives are minimal: the visuals are nice, it can be entertaining when functioning, there’s a solid player base and many servers to join. But the negatives are significant.

First, performance issues are constant. Only about 5 out of a thousand games run smoothly without lag, glitches, or sudden disconnections. It’s not my internet, but other online games work just fine. Joining a server often means spawning without a weapon and surviving several tense seconds before things finally load. Occasionally, I hear strange noises that seem to spike in volume and disappear quickly. Battlelog also struggles, sometimes taking hours to unlock attachments.

The game’s glitches are still present compared to its launch state. Campaign mode is nearly unplayable because characters often abandon the group unexpectedly, forcing me to restart.

Netcode is terrible—players frequently get dropped or blocked, even behind cover. Enemies are tough to eliminate, and vehicles give players an unfair edge. I’ve seen maps that are either overcrowded with traps or open for campers, making it hard to win.

And the learning curve is steep. On open maps, I often got caught in endless loops of campers and snipers, while only a few managed objectives. Being in a vehicle is a huge advantage, but it leads to predictable playstyles and easy kills for those who don’t adapt.

All in all, I feel strongly about this decision. It’s wasted money for me, and the experience is far from enjoyable. I’m not recommending it to anyone else.

Wait... Why not? The only games that are worse are BF Hardline and everything after CoD 4. Edit: Also Flatout 3...

Operation Metro is designed not to act as a bottleneck. What are your internet speeds? Since they recently "fixed" the game, I haven’t heard any updates about network codes or anything... Are there others online? What’s the latency to the server you’re using?

I believe you should look into it. Most Battlefield and CoD titles are functional. I’m not claiming they’re great, just that they work. There are some that are much worse.

Playing Counter-Strike keeps you engaged. It's the only competitive FPS I'll ever enjoy.

I had none of the issues you described, which makes me wonder if you put any effort into looking into them at all. I've had one issue since launch, and it took 90 seconds to fix. Since then I've had only good experiences with the game. Operation metro is a BF3 map (?) I dont know if they re-added it to BF4 in an update since I didn't buy premium or any DLC's. This sounds like a server issue or a matter of who you play with. I find servers with active and serious communities and join their teamspeaks, allowing so much more teamplay and coordination. Jumping into a 64player alone is always going to be bad. 4. I don't know what you expected in an 18 month old multiplayer game. Go play any multiplayer game thats been out for a while and join any server and odds are that until you get better at the game you'll get shit on. Playing with high level players is the only way to get better, joining "noob friendly" servers will be boring and nobody will work together. Sounds like this is more of a you problem. Try to have fun with it, and you will.

It seems like you've been playing this game for over 300 hours, mostly without major problems, especially after the latest update. #2 This is likely related to engine changes since they require a year to develop a new version. #3 I'm on your side regarding that point. #4 Don't wait 18 months after launch and assume there'll be too many new players. Even though it's now $10, most people who were interested already got it. The game functions well, particularly after their recent significant update.

I understand why the netcode isn't great. The changes they made in hardline actually slowed down the gameplay. It's still the same issues, just worse now—sometimes you're lagging more than 200ms. The battlefield is trying to make it competitive, but it's still frustrating. :lol
