I'm facing a problem here. I attempt to connect a second HDMI monitor using the one built into the motherboard, but the 6800XT only has three display ports and one HDMI. I’m not sure if buying another DisplayPort cable is worth it if it won’t work in practice. Since the GPU is using passthrough, I send a DisplayPort cable from the GPU to the motherboard’s DisplayPort IN. I’ve updated all drivers, including Thunderbolt ones, on a fresh Windows 11 installation. What might I be missing?
I believe the DisplayPort on the motherboard is only linked to the Thunderbolt ports, meaning you’d need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, and then you could simply use another DP cable. The HDMI built into the motherboard connects only to the integrated GPU, which many Ryzen processors lack, making it ineffective.
I anticipate two potential problems. You might not have a chipset with built-in graphics (where the motherboard connectors are located). Your BIOS could disable integrated graphics when a graphics card is connected, so you can simply adjust that configuration. What type of processor do you have? I thought passthrough was intended for running a virtual machine.
I also tested the USB-C to DisplayPort cable I use on my Mac Mini, but it didn’t work. It doesn’t appear in the Thunderbolt app either. I double-checked the manual—it says HDMI is only for IPUs, yet I know the Thunderbolt 4 to DisplayPort cable functions on my Mac. Still no success.
Earlier comments indicated it would only operate the two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, leaving the HDMI out. With a 5800x display, there are no built-in graphics capabilities. Unfortunately, the Thunderbolt 4 to DisplayPort configuration described in the manual isn't functioning either.
It's odd the USB-C to DP cable doesn't seem to function, even though it should be possible. Perhaps the option needs to be activated first, or you must choose a particular GPU output for it to work. You might have to pick the correct USB-C port connected to the DP input or adjust another unusual setting.
The device will receive the DP signal and transform it exclusively to Thunderbolt, compatible with a Thunderbolt dock. This setup avoids using USB-C, meaning it won’t integrate as easily with a standard USB connection, though it would still function with a dock. Directly linking via cable would be significantly more expensive, likely doubling or tripling the cost compared to a direct GPU connection.
Asus confirms: two Intel® Thunderbolt™ 4 ports (USB Type-C®) enable DisplayPort 1.2/1.4 and Thunderbolt video outputs. Signals are sent to TBT4_E1 and TBT4_E2, positioned beside RJ45 connectors, each needing a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter cable. I possess the cable as described in the manual or on the website.
I must respectfully differ, a dongle handled the task. I had a USB-C/Thunderbolt dongle with HDMI that connected and displayed in Radeon Adrenalin. Configuration finished successfully. Appreciate all the support and insights. You're excellent!
