Are you sure that Windows Notepad is just a cloud thing today?
Stop letting me store my private ideas in a drive that only works on my computer. Why can't Notepad tell me to save when I shut down the program as it did before? Also, does Notepad act this way even on Windows 10?
It's still local, but all AWP store apps show a loading screen and telemetry data. The system shell handles this and makes the app window appear right away. However, the heavy software needs time to start up, so there is still a noticeable delay after that, even if you have a fast SSD. That's why many people made special shortcuts for the old-style Windows 32 calculator instead of using the new Windows 10 calculator app. The problem is, even though the classic win32 notepad program is included in Windows 11, Microsoft has tried to trick users into running something else by trying to redirect attempts to launch it...
It saves my notes in the cloud, right? Since that last Windows 11 update, something changed. The note pops up instantly, but then it waits a second before showing the text. It looks like the text is coming down from somewhere.

I don't use OneDrive at all. Actually, I even took it away. That specific file was sitting right on my computer screen. Other files are all either on my computer or in my private cloud box called a NAS.

This was why so many people went to the trouble of creating a shortcut to the classic win32 calculator instead of using the trashy Windows 10 modern calculator app. Problem is, even though the classic win32 notepad program is still included in Windows 11, Microsoft have gone through some trouble to redirect any attempts to run it to the modern notepad store app. There are workarounds which allow you to launch old notepad.exe, but unlike the calculator you are going to have text files everywhere and double-clicking on those can still bring up the app instead, because Microsoft keeps reverting the file association for text files back to it. Apps are the future, since it's just an irresistible opportunity to place contextual ads into the brave new AI powered Windows 12, as in "Looks like you are trying to do your taxes/write a letter, here is a discount for TurboTax or MS Word!" after the ever watchful AI looking over your shoulder infers what you are doing. Windows 11 23H2 (which you can preview now but isn't in general release yet) already added Bing Chat AI Copilot for search, and OpenAI cocreator to generate images for you in the Paint 3D app.
