Are MMOs still a thing?
Are MMOs still a thing?
I invested a significant amount of time in MMOs during my teenage years, especially Runescape. I'm curious if anyone still enjoys them today. It appears that now most games are either triple-A titles, indie projects, or competitive e-sports. If they remain enjoyable, which ones are the most popular?
MMOs are still around, like Tanki Online and World of Tanks. These are the kinds of games I'd suggest.
Guild Wars 2 remains active, and the main gameplay stays free. If you're keen and have about 17 minutes, this video covers all key points about the game. Right now we're also taking part in an 8-bit themed Super Adventure Festival.
mmo lite represents a major trend in the current gaming landscape, alongside popular shooter looters such as borderlands 3, destiny, and anthem.
FFXIV, BDO, OSRS, and ESO remain active communities.
Many new MMO releases have emerged but faded quickly (like Bless), while older ones continue to thrive.
WoW and Elder Scrolls Online are performing well.
The remaining titles, such as SWTOR, Age of Conan, and several Asian MMOs, tend to be pay2win or otherwise restricted behind payment thresholds.
Eve Online remains active according to my understanding, though it stands apart.
Traditional MMOs will likely fade from mainstream popularity, as the appeal of expansive open worlds and multiplayer interaction has faded for many players. Moreover, MMOs have unintentionally diminished the social elements of gaming, leaving minimal incentive for most users today.
