Are MMOs still a thing?
Are MMOs still a thing?
It wasn't really 10 million players, it was just the total number of accounts. The game likely didn't reach half that many if we look at ARR, hardware sales, and sales by store.
I mostly rely on FFXIV Census: https://ffxivcensus.com/
I don’t remember the links others found on Reddit. I wish it had more than 10 million active players, or DPS questions wouldn't be so frustrating.
I’m not familiar with WoW either. I never played it.
I received those details. It seems they include both cumulative and free accounts. I had to figure out how they calculated these figures, then noticed on GitHub they extract lodestone data. In one sense, I think their numbers might be underestimated because their active threshold is based on reaching 4.1. I know many players start grinding from the beginning and haven’t even hit SB yet. On the other hand, it could also be inflated since multiple characters per account is possible. I have three characters that are roughly current, though I still need to complete 4.56 MSQ on two. A better metric might be tracking active subscriptions over a certain period. Probably not feasible outside SE. An alternative could be adjusting the criteria, such as saving a character’s level changes in the last xx days—though this may not help with DPS queues. I can’t heal or tank, so that pain is real. The issue seems to lie in the ratio of class players. It would be interesting to see how the NPC system in Shadow Bringers impacts this. Likewise, I never tried it even though I did a few free trials.
In fact, you're correct, although fortunately I mostly have positions at 70 and changing jobs is an option (though I don't really like it too much).
