Are E Sports An Actual Sport
They're not sports, they're e-sports. Completely different yet equally impressive. I'd choose SCII any time instead of football.
Whether you label them as "sports" or not, they are clearly competitive events with highly skilled participants. Those who dismiss them are simply uninformed in my view.
It's really about perspective. Sport is a specific category, so the debate over esports being sports or not makes sense. Edit: That person in the video seems completely out of context. I believe labeling professional gamers as slobs is much more hurtful than calling them athletes. They dedicate themselves to games just like any athlete trains for a sport. Even though I don't see pro gamers as athletes, I do appreciate the time and effort they invest. Personally, I’d call esports a sport for the reasons @XzisT mentioned, but I wouldn’t label them athletes since ‘athlete’ implies physical activity.
The same concept applies to both poker and chess—physicality isn't essential. We've experienced this countless times. The essence and backing behind these activities matter more than their physical aspect.
It's clear you're emphasizing the unique nature of e-sports. The idea that physical activity is essential to define a sport helps highlight why e-sports stands apart while still acknowledging its competitive essence. Many people mistakenly try to link e-sports with traditional sports, which doesn't fully capture its distinct character. It's important to recognize these differences and leverage the strengths that set it apart.
A sport is an activity involving people that adheres to certain guidelines, is competitive, and follows specific rules.
