I’ve played Starcraft 2 on the free version and it’s been quite enjoyable, though it feels similar to Command & Conquer. I’ve noticed the focus on high APM is a big topic. When I check my replays, my average APM was around 24, while the AI consistently hits 124. Despite that, I’ve managed to win using solid defense and strong armies. It seems the game rewards careful base planning more than raw speed. So, would it really matter if you have a high APM if you design your base well?

AI consistently outperforms others with its APM because of its efficiency. It executes tasks significantly quicker than human capabilities. OT: 24 APM? I’d have dozed off D: even during my slowest session, I manage 100 minutes thanks to micro and multitasking :3

An AI differs from a person in fundamental ways. Your current capacity seems limited—only five or ten tasks at once, while pros handle hundreds in the same span.

Wait for workers or units to complete their tasks...then increase the SC2. Also, my typical APM is around 140, and I won’t use the Hatchery/Command Center & map location shortcut.

It used to be a solid 180-200, but now it's closer to 100-120. I'm getting older.

APM seems more like a trick than a true measure. It shows how quickly a player can send commands, but real pros often rush through keys without meaning. In practice, speed doesn't always mean skill. When I watched SC2, it was amusing to see a famous US/KR player blasting keys like 'no' while losing to a Finnish semi-pro who averaged 80 APM—though it jumped to 160 when something urgent happened.

They haven't addressed the issue yet. Do you think strong planning can make up for a lower APM?

A solid plan only matters if you can implement it quickly, so yes. Greater APM is essential.

I discovered the reason for my low APM (30-40). During building, it spikes but drops once I deploy an army and construct three Nexus structures on natural terrain (yes, I play Protoss). I mostly wait for my forces to train before launching attacks. While engaging enemies, I only shift to the next base and turn on shields. When mineral fields run out, I expand new bases. Any advice on effective actions during troop training or enemy base raids?
