Keep in mind, values over 170 APM are just noise. RTS titles usually demand the highest skill ceilings among all formats. In Dota, you might succeed with less pressure, but that doesn’t apply to Sc2.

APM matters less unless you're serious. Strategy remains key. As you compete more and face tougher opponents, you'll handle tasks simultaneously and your APM improves. If the game feels too similar to C&C, avoid playing Terran or Protoss—try Zerg instead, as they offer a distinct experience. Gateway play is fine, but sticking to it long-term can become repetitive.

you only require as much APM as your skill level demands, and you need just that amount when it matters for both small and big aspects. good players tend to maintain their APM throughout the match to stay engaged and keep their hands warm, even if they only use the extra 100 APM during 10% of the game. don’t feel the need to repeat this, but it makes sense. i played competitive hon (a dota clone before dota 2) and likely wouldn’t win a match if my APM dropped below 170—assuming i was practicing other teams or trying to carry.
