My Core 2 system struggles with modded versions like 1.7.10 even when loaded with hundreds of modifications. Some older A8 models from 2012 running a 7750 can handle it just as well as newer titles such as Fallout 3 or Half-Life 2. NTM is fine for older games, modern software works without issues, and Linux (using fredora) is a good option. The Core 2 struggles with Garry’s Mod and even that feels slow. I don’t need an overclocked machine; I just want stable performance. Drivers on my motherboard aren’t for 10 or 8.1, but I must use compatibility mode on 8.1. Apologies if I was too harsh—I’m looking for a better setup. Updated January 11, 2021 by SombreroSonic

If you must purchase a board, opt for AM4. There are affordable Ryzen options that outperform AM3, but you'll also need to upgrade the RAM.

Consider used Optiplex 390 or 790 Mini Tower boards available on eBay for $15–20 in good condition. Pair them with an i7-2600 chip for $65–75, giving you a 4C/8T processor and a board that fits any case under $100. For budget builds, the i5-2500 is an alternative under $30 but offers only 4 cores/4 threads, which may restrict performance. Avoid AM3+ boards; they’re more expensive overall. While some CPUs could have eight cores, an AM3+ platform will add extra cost. The FX-8300 won’t match the i7-2600 IIRC in speed.
