I attempted to configure a dual monitor arrangement by linking one display into the GPU’s HDMI port and the other into its display port. The monitor connected via display port only displayed nothing, leading me to believe reinstalling or updating the GPU drivers would help. I also disabled integrated graphics in the BIOS prior to this. Now neither screen shows anything, not even the American megatrends BIOS interface. This isn’t related to my photo either. Even a monitor connected through the motherboard’s HDMI port remains blank. I removed the CMOS battery for five minutes and reinserted it into the PC without success. The system specs are: Windows 11, Intel i7-8700, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, Aorus GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming (rev. 1.0), Chieftec GPA-500S8, 500W PSU, ASUS VY249HE monitor, two units. I’ve documented every step I took. I unplugged both drives and powered on the PC. The system prompted to reboot and choose a boot device or insert boot media. After selecting Xubuntu Linux via USB, both monitors functioned. Once I disconnected the USB, restarted the PC, and then both screens were blank again—even after disconnecting the drives. Edit 2: After several restarts, one monitor started working once more. I’ve created backups of all critical files in case I can’t boot the system again after shutting it down.
Installation could have turned out poorly. A file corruption might be responsible. DDU is a low-level utility. It’s crucial to adhere to the usage guidelines. Remembered? One approach to enable basic video might involve disconnecting the hard drive, forcing the board to rely on its internal components. If your monitor can manage the signal normally, that should work.
It functioned just as expected before everything changed. A week back I purchased these two monitors, but due to my inexperience I neglected to verify if my GPU supported two HDMI ports. It only had one HDMI and three Display Ports. I connected one monitor through HDMI to the GPU and another through HDMI to the motherboard. That configuration worked perfectly. Now I bought a cable from HDMI to Display Port and used it to link a monitor to the GPU that was already on the motherboard. After that, the display stopped showing anything, which is what you already know.
I shut down the PC, removed both the SSD and HDD, and restarted it. Now one monitor displays: Reboot and choose the correct boot device or insert boot media in the selected device and press a key. Note: the problem recurred after restarting, but even after disconnecting the drives it didn’t resolve.
Alright, that should resolve it. If it didn’t, try pulling the drive—it might trigger the correct driver. Bioses can sometimes load from the disk if they can access it.
I just found an USB drive with Xubuntu installed and connected it to the computer using a live setup. Both screens functioned perfectly, so I shut it down. Then I connected the drives again and successfully booted into Windows. One display still isn’t working, but it worked fine on Linux. At least my PC is now usable. Thanks for your assistance.
Later I noticed the second monitor started working after about 15 minutes of leaving the computer on. I’m not sure why everything is functioning now, but I’m satisfied.
After a few restarts, both monitors became blank, but removing the drives didn’t help this time. I’ve backed up all my important files just in case I can’t boot again later.
It seems unusual that success depends on only a handful of attempts. The system must either always succeed or always fail. Using the video card alongside the iGPU doesn’t change the outcome.
