In extreme cases, the voltage regulation can fail, risking damage. You have to weigh the risks or accept potential issues later. Good mid-range boards are also reasonably priced. Check the specifications list—it's there for a reason and the creators understand their subject matter.

The main issues are: budget boards rely on low-quality parts that deteriorate quickly Cheap boards often feature inferior VRMs lacking sufficient power phases The first point stands out. A VRM failure is the fastest way to damage a motherboard Nothing can stop a VRM from blowing under stress The 9900 chip is an 8-core processor, and even though it shares the same 65W TDP as Pentium and i3 models, the board was built for more power than those chips. If it has few power phases and uses weak VRMs with tiny or missing heatsinks a 9900 will definitely destroy it. Haswell faced similar challenges. Certain H81M boards from MSI and AsRock were particularly unreliable Some i7-4770s on them might not even run without a K can handle the heat under load. Every chipset has its flaws, but those H81Ms were some of the worst aftermarket builds I've encountered.

If the board includes a real VRM heatsink with proper airflow, stock components should work well (except a few exceptions). Quality control can vary per unit, making it hard to judge without a large dataset. Also consider which bus interface might be problematic—PCIe 2.0 is generally acceptable.

You might also miss out on performance tweaking options and encounter issues with Intel LAN or outdated audio drivers on cheaper boards. Additionally, using budget components usually results in weaker power management, no over-voltage protection, and reduced longevity. Upgrading later can become more difficult—my current AM4 board isn’t compatible with Ryzen 3000 chips, so upgrading to a better board would have been much cheaper.

That's not a good choice. For a 9900K, a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus (pro or elite) would be better. A Gigabyte Z390 UD could work but isn't the best fit.
