It's a decent board for micro ATX builds, though it's primarily geared toward overclockers because it only offers two RAM slots and includes an LN2 cooling option.

It matches the capabilities of the XI Extreme in terms of power delivery, but the latter is a 4-dimming board and costs more than it justifies. All three models—XI Gene, XI Extreme, and Gigabyte Aorus Master—share similar VRM designs (6 phases; Gigabyte uses asynchronous doublers for 12 phases). The XI Extreme stands out as the most expensive option. The XI Apex offers superior VRM and voltage control compared to the others. It’s essentially a variant of the Gene with additional features.

The Gene, Xtreme, and Apex are recognized for their RAM performance. The Apex Z390 is considered the pinnacle in this category. It matches the Aorus Master in VRM handling and overall design. However, it only provides two RAM slots. For systems requiring more than 16 GB of RAM (such as dual 8 GB modules), you’d need higher-end dual-dimming options, which won’t deliver the same overclocking potential as single-dimming boards. This becomes a consideration mainly when pushing RAM to its limits.

Its BIOS offers more voltage options (ring voltage, adaptive voltage, etc.) than the Xtreme or Waterforce models. Despite this, its I/O ports and hardware match the standard Xtreme. It’s worth noting that cross-flashing may be possible to unlock extra settings, though it’s not widely advertised.

The Z390 Dark is another high-end choice, but its BIOS is considered the least user-friendly among the top models.
