Advice for using a controller in Rainbow Six Siege
I own an Xbox 360 controller and want to try playing R6, but I'm finding it hard to adjust to the change. It might be because I haven't played an FPS game with a controller in about two years. Back then I was good at FPS games like Call of Duty and thought using a controller would be comfortable for R6 as well. Now I struggle most with leaning and hitting moving targets since you have to ADS and lean with the sticks. It's tough to do it quickly during intense fights. For starting the game with a controller, what tips can you give and what settings should I use? Thanks.
Rainbow 6 features a highly effective control system, but there may be specific needs or preferences for using a particular controller.
Hello there Shammikit. I hope everything is going well with you.
I haven't played FPS games on the controller for a long time, but when I returned to PC gaming I felt quite at a disadvantage. Still, I don’t know what platform you're using. That’s something we can discuss another time.
From my own experience, here are some tips that helped me:
1: Try completing terrorist hunt missions to get comfortable.
2: Adjust your sensitivity and controller settings—using the stick to lean can make aiming more difficult; you might prefer swapping the leaning buttons for something like the d-pad.
3: If you're on a PC, consider using a basic keyboard and mouse. It’s tough to adapt at first, but I know many people use this method. Console siege also has players who rely on keyboards and mice, though some call it cheating.
4: Patience is key. Many opponents have been there since the beginning. Since we're in our fourth year of R6:S, you’ll likely start at a disadvantage. They have years of practice with controllers and aim techniques. When you feel more confident, try ranked matches—it’s full of skilled players who can show great aiming skills and how they position themselves. It’s a good way to learn from them.
I hope this gives you some useful ideas.
None really, as _d0nut_ mentioned you'd be putting yourself at a disadvantage. The only controllers that work well on PC are for racing sims/car games. In my view, it's a major mistake to play competitive shooters on PC with a controller... JK but seriously. Actually, instead of focusing on mastering the controller, why not just use the mouse and keyboard?
I was better at using the controller in FPS games than the keyboard and mouse, which is why I decided to give it a shot in R6.
It could really be a great chance to jump to KB/M, though the learning curve will be tough. But it's definitely worth it because aiming here is more accurate than using sticks. Many older FPS games, such as CoD, include aim assistance, which R6 lacks. That might explain why you're finding it more difficult.
i've been focusing solely on the terrorist hunt for the last few days. the default sensitivity works for me, but can i adjust the lean to use the d-pad? it seems like ubisoft might have turned off key mapping in the controller.
the pc would be considered a violation of cheating rules in battle eye if you use such software
