They probably added two-factor authentication and confirmed your identity via email, which you missed until later. I haven't used Origin in a half year. I don't receive business emails, so I don't check my inbox daily. I only log in when I expect a message. Maybe it was due to lack of focus or security concerns, but EA shouldn't have poor support. The only choice they offered was to call me within a certain time frame, and the option was limited to users in the US and Canada, making it hard for me to get assistance.
