9700k or 3600

I'm setting up a gaming-focused system and discovered a 9700k at a similar price to a Ryzen 5 3600. While Intel isn't ideal these days, a 9700k offers better performance than the 3600. I'm considering going with the 9700k. Regarding overclocking, which motherboards support it? And will a 650-watt gold PSU handle the upgraded CPU and RTX 3070?

I discovered a motherboard at a lower price than what I planned for the 3600 with the 9700k. When you add the motherboard and CPU together, the 9700k becomes more affordable. I also already own an NHU-12s.

For long-term upgrade potential, choosing the 9700K is pointless. To be ready for future upgrades, the only viable option is the 9900K, though it offers little improvement over the 9700K.

When both CPU, motherboard, and cooler match in price, go for the 9700K. If the Intel side pushes your total up by $150–$200, expect costs to jump into the 3600+ range. It’s usually smarter to pick a GPU you can afford and use the built-in cooler.
