6700k decreases to 3.8ghz during testing with IBT/P95
Hello.
My 6700k setup on stock on msi z170m mortar with cryorig c1 works fine. The voltage is around ~1.330v, but changing the ratio to x40 brings it down to ~1.180v. When I run IBT, my core speed drops significantly—only reaching 3.8 and briefly hitting 4ghz for a couple seconds. At P95 it gets even worse, only jumping on single cores, never all at once. Temperatures are about 66°C.
For Dota2, the OSD monitors show consistent 4ghz. While IBT runs, my FPS drops slightly (from 144 to 120) and the monitor readings match those of IBT running alone (3.8ghz with jumps to 4ghz).
After overclocking to 4.4Ghz @ 1.275, core speeds were set at 3.3ghz and then jumped up to 4.4ghz. It seems the chip is struggling to maintain stable performance. Is it possible something went wrong during the overclock? I didn’t plan this change, but seeing only 3.8ghz instead of the expected 4ghz is quite disappointing. Any suggestions?
The chip will reduce the multiplier when it detects excessive heat.
Downdraft coolers tend to perform worse than tower solutions.
How is your case airflow doing?
Remove the covers and observe if it improves things.
If so, consider a case cooling option.
Skylake operates well, but you shouldn’t see such performance.
The intel burn test and prime95 stress with unusual commands.
These create extra heat not seen during regular use.
Try using occt—it will display temperature trends and halt the test at 85°C.
Throttling temperature is about 100c.
You are nowhere near that.
Turbo kicks in on one core when the others have little to do.
I would implement adaptive voltage and speedstep.
That will lower the multiplier and vcore when there is little to do.
If you want, then you can gradually raise the multiplier, but it is hardly necessary with the 6700K.
IBT is intended to generate heat. It is ok if you want to test your cooler.
If you want to overclock, OCCT is a better stress tester.
The metric to monitor is Vcore. Keep that at 1.40 or lower under load.
With skylake, the top vcore appears to be around 1.4v.
Silicon lottery bins chips and offers better options at a higher price.

What percentage of users can achieve an overclock on a reasonably stable 1.40v I7-6700K?

The i7-6700K is exceptionally strong—do you really need to overclock?
At stock, it should operate at 4.0 with a 4.2 turbo boost.
I have configured the system with Ratio auto, voltage mode auto, and a voltage of 1.200. It appears stable; idle operation works fine, and turbo boost functions without exceeding 66°C. When I switch to offset or adaptive modes, the idle and turbo stop working.
