I recently installed a refurbished 4090 graphics card yesterday. Everything appeared normal at startup, but once it booted, performance dropped significantly. I performed a driver update (haven't done DDU yet) and installed GPU-Z. The card supports PCIe Gen 2 x16, which led me to suspect that was the problem. I also observed high GPU utilization while idle and noticed the backplate getting warm. After changing the PCIe setting to Gen 4 in BIOS, it froze briefly after logging in. Switching back to auto PCIe resolved the issue temporarily, but the behavior didn't fully revert. There were a few blue screens, though I couldn't see them clearly—the screen went black during boot but recovery worked. Booting into safe mode was smooth. I tried using DDU from safe mode to see if it would help. After reinstalling my 2080 graphics card, everything functioned correctly. I have several suggestions to test:
- Reinstall applications that launch at startup
- Use DDU and reinstall drivers
- Adjust PCIe lanes to 8x (reported on forums)
- Disable PCIe management in BIOS
- Tweak NVIDIA settings to prioritize max performance
- Consider upgrading to a more powerful PSU (currently using 850W, ASUS suggests 1000W)
- Remove all storage except the boot drive
- Try PCIe Gen 3
- Test with a different GPU if possible
What should I try next? Any advice would be appreciated. The deadline is coming up in a few weeks.
EDIT: The card now works with PCIe 3.0. Still working on compatibility with PCIe 4.0.
No, I'm not using a PCIe riser cable for vertical mounting.
