I recently installed a refurbished 4090 graphics card yesterday. Everything appeared normal at startup, but once it booted, performance dropped significantly. I performed a driver update (haven't done DDU yet) and installed GPU-Z. The card supports PCIe Gen 2 x16, which led me to suspect that was the problem. I also observed high GPU utilization while idle and noticed the backplate getting warm. After changing the PCIe setting to Gen 4 in BIOS, it froze briefly after logging in. Switching back to auto PCIe resolved the issue temporarily, but the behavior didn't fully revert. There were a few blue screens, though I couldn't see them clearly—the screen went black during boot but recovery worked. Booting into safe mode was smooth. I tried using DDU from safe mode to see if it would help. After reinstalling my 2080 graphics card, everything functioned correctly. I have several suggestions to test:

- Reinstall applications that launch at startup
- Use DDU and reinstall drivers
- Adjust PCIe lanes to 8x (reported on forums)
- Disable PCIe management in BIOS
- Tweak NVIDIA settings to prioritize max performance
- Consider upgrading to a more powerful PSU (currently using 850W, ASUS suggests 1000W)
- Remove all storage except the boot drive
- Try PCIe Gen 3
- Test with a different GPU if possible

What should I try next? Any advice would be appreciated. The deadline is coming up in a few weeks.

EDIT: The card now works with PCIe 3.0. Still working on compatibility with PCIe 4.0.

Always start with DDU first, then explore other options. Newer models like 4090, 5080 and 5090 are causing issues for many users. Consider using a more established driver instead. NVIDIA is pushing early adopters to act as beta testers.

You're running the newest software with your 4090 and everything is working smoothly.

I would revert to two to three previous iterations.

You just noticed a BSD logo. It displayed DTC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.

Failed initially, but worked after installing the drivers (566.14).

Checked the stability of 566.03 by searching online. Many users reported issues with it being faulty or broken. Similar complaints appeared for other versions like 566.14.

I adjusted the PCIe slot to Gen 3 and it has started working after two minutes. It seems fine, though performance is still significantly reduced compared to what it should be. Might be related to the motherboard?

No, I'm not using a PCIe riser cable for vertical mounting.
