If you focus solely on performance and ignore other factors, the 9900K has a slight edge. I share your perspective but prefer the 3900X since it excels in more areas compared to the 9900K.

For pure gaming focus, the i7 9700K with OC might offer better value and performance, or the 8700K if your titles gain from hyperthreading. As GN Steve mentioned, you can find more insights here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuUwLuQGPj4

Unless you have a constant flow of cash, you should consider going up to 3700x. It’s about 250 USD less and works fine without a super powerful graphics card, which also helps lower the cost. The 9900k model needs a stronger cooler, increasing the price further. I’ve tested both at 1440p and found no noticeable performance change. You can always switch to a Ryzen 4000 with the same card and sell the 3700x if you’re not satisfied. A 4800x or higher will probably make the small gap between them even smaller now.

The 3900x works adequately, but it isn't significantly superior to a 3700X for this job. It might perform better when you're handling other tasks concurrently. The 9900k also stands out among the three, though it may feel almost identical at 1440p without benchmarking.

Consider buying a compatible motherboard for the 3600X. For gaming at 1440p, the 3600X should suffice for about two years. The 3700X offers more cores and could be a better choice if you plan to use it with a PS5. The PS5's CPU performance may match or exceed that of the 3700X.

I'm using the Ryzen 7 3700X right now and am holding off on getting the Ryzen 9 3900X. My GPU is a 2070 Super with 3600MHz RAM. I don't expect major gains just for gaming, but when I have tasks running—like Discord, Team Speak, or a game—I'll notice a slight improvement in speed. Gaming alone shouldn't change much.

That's impressive! Did you really score such a high price?
