2990wx Hackintosh
Build: CPU 2990wx (waterchiller) GPU RTX 2080 2x NVlink, Quadro P4000 MOBO x399 Aorus Pro (will move to MEGA CREATION later), NVMe 2x 970 Samsung PRO 512Gb RAM at 3200MHz, Clocked to 2993 Question: Can I install macOS on this setup? The main tasks are Sketchup Design and Vray Rendering mostly. I’m thinking switching to Linux but can’t get Vray there and have issues with Sketchup. I can run those programs on a Mac. I’m exhausted about Windows and if there’s any chance I should give it a try. Thanks for your advice.
2000 series GPUs aren't compatible with macOS, and the speculation suggests they might not be supported in the future. The Quadro model is uncertain. Visit www.tonymacx86.com for more details—they have better information.
P4000 may function but with difficulties; a bug blocks the boot screen display, making installation impossible. You’ll need a different card to set up the OS, boot once, and then install the Nvidia webdriver package. Once connected, you can use it with your Quadro. Also, macOS doesn’t support SLI.
You have a vintage 1060 card and are feeling weary about using W10 anymore.
Using a modern Nvidia card in a hackintosh setup comes with challenges. It's unclear if this fits your needs, but have you thought about tailoring the system from scratch? Personally, I don't like W10 either, but I've made significant changes and it no longer feels like that version. My preferred setup is an upgraded Windows 7, but done correctly.
I upgraded today to the new W10 version since they included improvements in the threadrippers series, though it’s not great. I’m forced to run Core Prio just to fix the core switching every time. I tried a PowerShell script to shut down some W10 components and switch to W7, but that didn’t help much.
It usually takes about 1.5 years for NVIDIA to launch a Pascal driver for macOS. I believe they probably won’t release anything for RTX cards since the community isn’t large enough. However, if NVIDIA chose to back the new Mac Pro, things could improve. That would be encouraging.
Additionally, if you plan to use this in a professional setting, you should note that violating the terms of service may constitute a technical breach.
The traditional Hackintosh approach isn't viable because your CPU and GPU don't work with OSX. There are no known solutions for AMD chips or RTX graphics cards. If you're open to exploring, the virtual machine method is an option, though it's complex and time-consuming. Linus and Anthony discuss this in a video—good luck!
