I just got an i7 9700k and a z390 board. I noticed it has 12 EPS pins, while my current cable only has 8. I’m unsure if I need to connect the remaining 4 as well. My PC is running smoothly, even though I haven’t tried overclocking yet. I also purchased a Noctua U12A and plan to overclock it, aiming for 4.9 or 5.0 across all cores. The question is whether to connect the extra 4 pins before attempting overclocking. My PSU is a Corsair TX850M, rated at 850W gold certified. Thanks!

You don't need to link the additional 4-pin. The regular 8-pin EPS can provide more than 300W, which is sufficient even for the high OCd 9900k

One year ago when i bought my PC (parts) i had the same issue, i even OC'd the 9700k to 5Ghz all cores, till 10 days ago when suddenly everything turned black, the mobo died I replaced it with the warranty, When i went to a local shop to see what the problem was, he told me there is a 90% chance that the 4 pin cpu power that was not connected caused the problem..

You'll quickly run out of thermal space before reaching the power limit of the 8-pin connector, making it unnecessary to connect the 4-pin. This setup is mainly for pushing performance beyond normal limits, such as with liquid nitrogen.

If the extra 4-pin CPU connector isn't required, it's unclear why makers included it—especially since you're considering a high-end PSU for that purpose.

It's possible the absence of a 4-pin connector caused the board to fail. Overloading it or overheating components could have led to failure. Without sufficient power, the system would become unstable or shut down.

The technician likely fabricated a reason, thinking he could eliminate you, and then provided an explanation that seemed straightforward. He lacked knowledge about PC technology and relied on what appeared to be the simplest solution.
