The goal of VRR (G-sync and Freesync) is to let the frame rate change smoothly within the maximum refresh rate. This prevents tearing on non-VRR screens and avoids the lag and jitter from V-sync. Being able to set any desired frame rate under your refresh without these issues is a major advantage, as it helps maintain consistent timing and smooth visuals. For instance, on a 144Hz display, you can still detect fluctuations between 140 and 80 fps, even though they’re within the VRR range. These variations create noticeable differences in frame timing that disrupt immersion, making me focus on performance rather than gameplay. With VRR, you can cap the frame rate at any level—like 90 fps or higher—within the refresh limit, ensuring steady performance without tearing or lag.

I generally accept 30 fps for most games I enjoy. Higher frames per second like 40 and 50 also perform well when VRR is enabled. I haven't found a title that would prevent me from achieving smooth gameplay at a reasonable rate, even on my older system. The Black Myth: Wukong benchmark worked just fine on my PC, though I didn’t test the complete version. Dragon's Dogma 2 likely had too many stutters before the newest updates, but I believe it could run at around 30 fps with those improvements.

So I made the adjustment, in RTSS you need async sync and passive waiting; otherwise it will lock one core at 95% all the time. I found this by limiting the game to 30 FPS and the core stayed stuck, whereas in the game cap it returned to normal usage. Second, I turned off triple buffering in the game since RTSS async adds a single frame buffer anyway, so no need for 4. Now I can lock my DPS at 90, which gives me 90 in the 1% lows and only a tiny drop below 60, providing a much smoother experience than the in-game FPS cap with excellent frame pacing.
