I have a system running on HEX OS. It has performed well since the initial public launch. Roughly two weeks back I received an email about a ZFS error. I chose to run the scrub operation to attempt a fix. Unfortunately, it made things worse. The machine would repeatedly crash during boot when importing the drive pool. During troubleshooting, I managed to resolve the issue on my own. I’m still unable to get the system to start, and even importing the pool in read-only mode isn’t working. I’m at a standstill and don’t know what next steps to take. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Update: I exported the pool from TrueNAS and it now boots with all four drives connected. But it crashes immediately when trying to import.

This command is being executed for clarity and completeness. It doesn't omit any steps unnecessarily, and the reasoning behind each part remains intact.

Op could also try adding -F and -X to check for a previous stable version and recovery option. Even if it helps, the next step would be to back up the data and rebuild the pool. I think the issue might have started when expanding the vdev.

Right now, whenever I load the pool in read/write mode it causes the system to crash instantly. In read-only mode it works but I still encounter many errors in the web interface. Is expanding the vdev the correct way to import the pool? I’m considering checking an older configuration. I purchased the 8TB Seagate Exonix drives from server promotions. How should I safely back up the data? So far, I’ve only been able to perform a read-only import.

I struggled to determine if older states were available for import. I added more details to the true nas forums, but the same problem persisted—the pool can only be imported in a read-only state. Trying to import it causes the machine to crash and shut down after about 4 to 6 seconds.

Reading-only mode could be your most viable option. I understand it may be challenging to back up data from this state, but that seems like something you should anticipate.

Thanks Johnt. I have backup drives set up to start copying data from the read-only state, though I haven’t had time to finalize the setup yet. If you need guidance on how to proceed, any resource you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.
