z490 Coil Whine
z490 Coil Whine
Long time observer, new poster recently bought a 10700k and an ROG Strix z490-a. I'm experiencing the worst coil whine ever. I plan to share a recording if anyone is interested, but the problem only appeared after replacing the motherboard. I've tested various power supplies without resolving it. Is this a typical issue with this model? Are Strix boards generally affected like this? Should I rush to replace it, or is the same one preferable? This is really frustrating.
Are you certain it's coil whine? From the motherboard? Could you share a video? If you can.
It seems coil whine is present, similar to older AMD GPUs where frequency shifts with mouse movement. The motherboard modifications don’t seem to resolve it. I noticed that overloading the RGB header can cause noise, so removing it didn’t help. The issue appears to intensify when moving away from the GPU and PSU, especially toward the VRM area.
Are you certain it's not the CPU fan or the pump? (If it's an AIO)
Other components can cause coil whine, not just Asus products. Certain inductor styles are more prone to this issue, though modern motherboards likely don<|pad|> a lot of them.
Turned off all my case fans and the GPU just for laughs. Same outcome. It’s possible I’m still in the return period. I’ll test another unit, maybe my Z170, to see if it fully resolves with that change. I’ve made several adjustments since the problem began, so confirming if this part is the issue would be helpful.
You may attempt to estimate the result or verify functionality by running stress tests and observing any issues.
