Hey there, let's talk about upgrading. With the current situation and the workload ahead—engineering PhD projects, heavy Matlab tasks with big image files, and post-processing—I think it makes sense to refresh my main system. I'm still into RTS, survival games, and a few others like Subnautica, The Long Dark, Iron Harvest, and Battletech. My setup is pretty standard: ASRock Z370 Extreme4 with an i5-8600K, 16GB DDR4 memory, and a couple of storage drives for backup and archiving. I also have a GTX-1070 FE, some random drives for redundancy, and a few other components that are mostly stable unless I hit storage limits.

I’m not a gamer in the traditional sense, but I do enjoy games like Subnautica and Battletech. My current hardware feels a bit outdated compared to what I’m planning. If I need more memory, I might consider an M.2 upgrade, but for now, I’ll stick with what I have. The cooling is decent, but I’m not sure if it’s enough for the heat from all these tasks.

For the CPU, I’m leaning toward an i7-9700K—it’s a solid choice and more efficient than the i7-8700K. The i7-9900K sounds like it could handle the workload better, but it might be overkill unless you need extra threads. If memory is tight, 64GB should work, though I’m curious if going lower in clock speed would help with thermal limits.

Sounds reasonable—about 9.7 million dollars plus 32 gigabytes of storage. Or you could skip the K and go with the regular 9700 or the F models without an integrated GPU.

In the real world outside of XOC, you don't necessarily have to adjust the timing beyond 18-18 for 3200-3600 DDR4.
