I’ve been attempting to restore this computer, but it keeps failing. My patience is wearing thin. To give you a quick overview, this machine was new less than a year ago and had no problems before. Suddenly, after installing Sims 4, the system freezes anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes into play. The issue feels unusual—no spikes in the MSI afterburner or any clear signs of overheating. Once it works, the game runs smoothly, but then everything halts abruptly. It’s happening repeatedly, only varying crash duration. Even now, every game causes the same problem. Despite testing memory, graphics cards, and drivers, nothing has been definitively wrong until recently. Recently, running chkdsk on the C drive stopped at stage 4 and refused to proceed. I thought a fresh Windows install and a clean reset would help. That worked partially—PC moved faster and seemed stable—but after reinstalling Sims 4 again, it crashes after about 20 minutes. The crash pauses briefly but then the whole screen goes dark with occasional colors and strange pixels, followed by total blackout. I also noticed fans spinning rapidly before the machine had to be shut down. Since the latest graphics drivers were added, it resembles the same pattern as before. I’m unsure what to do next; any guidance or suggestions would be invaluable. Thank you for reading!

Specs:
- Asus EVO OC Edition 2060
- Corsair 650W power supply
- Ryzen 7 5800X
- 500GB SSD
- 2TB hard drive
- 2x 8GB DDR4 3600MHz RAM
- MSI Mag B550 Tomohawk board

What kind of RAM are you asking about?
Is it Corsair?

Place RAM sticks sequentially in each slot to check for improvements.

After resetting the BIOS, it seems they’re likely running on standard defaults unless you adjust them manually.

note: the discussions around chkdsk and reinstall suggestions point to a failing hard drive. if adding more RAM isn't enough, the next action should be purchasing a reliable SSD.

I'll try to do it when I can, though it might take some time. I'll keep you posted, thank you for your support! Using chkdsk on the D drive shouldn't affect the C drive, should it work.

What storage device are you using? The C drive needs a restart to verify properly, ideally before the system loads fully—don’t check it while Windows is running. An SSD is preferred over a traditional HDD for faster installations.
