You're unsure about selecting a motherboard, let me clarify the options for you!
Hey, I'm trying to figure out the best mATX board for my setup. It's a 3300x with a 1660 OC GPU, and I need something that fits within budget. I want a board with four RAM slots so I can expand later. There are several options in price range, but I'm not sure which one is right. All of them support different RAM speeds from 3200 to 4400. Should I focus on the maximum RAM speed? I was thinking of getting two 8GB modules at 3600 MHz. Some boards have USB-C ports, which could be useful. Audio options include ALC887 and ALC892 models. At the end of it, I'm really unsure what to prioritize—this is more complicated than I thought! Here are the mATX boards I've considered so far: Asus Prime B450M-A, Asrock B450M Steel Legend, MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX, Gigabyte B450M DS3H, and Asrock B450M PRO4-F. Each has different RAM speeds and features. What should I choose and why? Also, why do some listings mention max RAM speed like 3466+ OC? Thanks for your help!
the ram speed isn't the main factor, it's generally constrained by the cpu, not the board. among these options, the top choices are steel legend, pro-vdh max and pro4-f. the key parts of motherboards are the vrms, which supply power to the cpu. the asus and gigabyte models you're thinking about have lower vrms; they're adequate for a ryzen 3 or 5, but they won't meet your needs if you plan to upgrade to a ryzen 7. none of these boards are suitable for a ryzen 9.
I’d choose the Pro-VDH Max for myself—it’s confirmed to work with the 3300X and other Ryzen 3000 chips right out of the box. Have you looked at the B450-A Pro Max? Regarding memory details, the “+” in specs usually refers to Asrock’s marketing claims about compatibility. Still, a 3600MHz clock speed should fit on two memory sticks with a Zen 2 chip like the 3300X, thanks to the improved memory controller compared to older Ryzen processors (Zen and Zen+).
Thanks for the tips, but I’m choosing the Arock. There’s also a B450M Pro4 and a B450M Pro4-F—what’s the point of that? Why are there so many variations? I don’t see any clear distinctions on their pages!
