Here’s a more concise version while keeping the key points intact:

I tried to upgrade my internet setup, starting with a 200 Mbps Cat8 connection from my router into my room. I connected it to a switch and then plugged in both my PS4 and first PC (built last week). Both devices consistently got around 230 Mbps, but my PC managed up to 480 Mbps wirelessly. However, the wireless speeds on my phone and laptop never exceeded 50 Mbps.

Spectrum offered a faster plan—400 Mbps—but it worked perfectly over hardwire on the PS4, averaging 300–350 Mbps. The PC still got 480 Mbps wireless, which was pretty poor. Eventually, I got 430+ Mbps on my phone or laptop for the first time.

The real issue started after swapping the router and modem. My PS4 and PC suddenly handled speeds of 200–230 Mbps, while Spectrum kept saying it was a problem. After resetting everything, the speeds returned to 200–230 Mbps. They suggested waiting, but I kept running into buffering and errors on Twitch and other streaming apps.

I tried clearing cache, disabling hardware acceleration, and even used different browsers and apps, but nothing fixed the problem. The wired connection felt much better than before, almost like new. Still, my work PC struggled with streaming and online meetings, especially with Skype and video calls.

After several attempts and resets, I ordered a new network switch, hoping it would solve the issue. But even then, I was left with slow speeds and frequent disconnections. It’s been a frustrating experience trying to get back to normal internet performance.

Do you have another device with an Ethernet port at home? Connect it to the router and move a file from your main computer to that device. This should help determine if the problem lies with the switch.

I have PC wired into the switch right next to mine. Noob question though: how can I transfer locally? Haven't used Windows since XP before this PC build...

On the device you wish to send the file TO: Set up a new folder on the desktop Right click -> Properties -> Sharing Tab Advanced sharing -> Share this folder Permissions (Same window) Click 'Everyone' Allow full control On the device you need to send the file FROM: Open file explorer \\network-path-of-shared-folder (Located in that sharing section from before.) Move and drop a file (a big one is suggested, at least 3+ GB)

When prompted for network details, connect via the TO computer. For Microsoft accounts, enter your email and password. For local accounts, use the provided credentials.

Thank you for the walkthrough—it's really helpful. I frequently send emails to my girlfriend, and this feature makes managing files much simpler. I moved a 4 MB file right away, and it appeared instantly in the TO folder. The 5 GB placeholder took six minutes to download but finished in just 54 seconds once it was transferred.

When you click 'more details' during file transfer, a mostly solid green bar should appear without any interruptions. A duration of 54 seconds seems appropriate. Screenshots show this clearly. If you intend to retain the folder, consider these options (avoid #3): secure it with restrictions, remove files immediately after transfer, as current permissions allow anyone on your network to access the folder and its contents.

Thank you for the guidance on folder security! Your summary indicates it looks stable, which suggests the switch isn't likely the cause.

Likely a problem with the service provider or the device they provided. It's possible I missed something in your message, but connection problems via Wi-Fi would also suggest an ISP or hardware issue.

I was facing similar buffering and error problems while streaming Twitch on my iPad and a couple of MacBooks. Around 1 am PST I noticed fewer issues now, which makes me think the problem might be related to unusual traffic patterns during the day when everyone is at home. Although I haven’t experienced these issues recently while working from home, the new hardware setup seems to have helped. The two tech reps I spoke with said they’ve handled the extra traffic well and didn’t see it as a concern here. I’ll keep an eye on it over the next week and hope it resolves itself. Thanks a lot for your assistance!
