Hi everyone, I've been playing quite a lot lately, but tougher games tend to cause my screen to stutter, like skipping frames while exploring areas in Assassin's Creed. I'm trying to figure out what's slowing me down. My setup includes: a desktop PC with an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard, an Intel i7 4790K at 4.00 GHz, a GeForce GTX 970 (MSI), 16GB DDR3 RAM (four 4GB Corsair modules), a 1TB Corsair Force MP510 M.2 NVMe SSD, and a LG 34UC87-B Ultrawide monitor at 3440x1440 resolution with 60Hz. Based on what I see, upgrading the graphics card might hit me at the CPU, or maybe my CPU needs a motherboard upgrade if it isn't compatible. RAM could be an issue since DDR3 won't work with higher-end parts. It's possible the monitor itself is limiting performance at 60Hz. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks in advance.

The 3440x1440p setup with the GTX970 isn't ideal. Start by reducing texture quality—keep other settings untouched. This should ease stuttering and avoid hitting the 3.5-4GB VRAM limit, which is likely causing performance drops. The GTX970 works better for 1080p or 1080p Ultra-Wide (2560x1080). At 1440p/UW1440p it becomes too taxing for AAA titles, especially when trying medium-high settings. The 3.5GB VRAM cap and core performance limits are holding things back. Lowering textures first should help, followed by adjusting shadows and VRAM-heavy assets. Upgrading to a better GPU or overclocking the CPU later would be more effective long-term.

I noticed your issue ↑ A challenging fix with limited resources. Upgrading your graphics card is definitely possible. Though the 4790k might slow things down slightly, it won’t be a major problem. You’ll just see a few frames per second drop compared to a newer CPU even with a 2080.

Thanks for your response. I was assuming I had more experience with overclocking, but I might be wrong. Perhaps it would be better to switch to the new GPU like Corrupt_Liberty recommended if that would help right now. In the future, I’d consider upgrading everything at once.

My screen is 49 inches wide, and even with two RTX 2080 graphics cards, I still face problems during intense gameplay.

I keep getting the same issue when I run Assassin's Creed Odyssey on low or medium settings with a playable stutter. If I can't play Ultra, fine, but it really bothers my eyes.

I understand your frustration. Running AC Odyssey is challenging, and having SLI support would make a big difference for my performance.

It's interesting that Assassins Creed Odyssey runs smoothly on your RTX 2080 Ti. It might just be the difference between a GTX and an RTX graphics card.

It works well on my 1080 Ti. However, keeping 60 fps remains challenging at the highest settings in 1440p. Without SLI support, reaching the 100fps target is still out of reach.
