I've experienced unusual performance problems with my current PC configuration, often experiencing lag and significantly reduced FPS compared to what the hardware should handle. (For instance, during 1080p gaming at 144fps caps, I frequently drop to around 90 FPS in Fortnite. In League of Legends, I notice sudden FPS drops from 144 to 120-130. Despite this not being a particularly demanding title, I've tried running a userbenchmark to better understand the issue. The results indicated my PC was in the lower 40th percentile. I upgraded my GPU from an RTX 2060 Super to a MSI RTX 3070 with 8GB of memory, but the problem persisted before the upgrade. All temperatures remain within normal ranges, and I'm not very skilled at troubleshooting, which is making it hard to know what to do next. Any advice would be appreciated!
Userbenchmark isn't reliable; online games are also impacted by ping, which causes dropped connections and lower FPS. Have you tried playing single-player games to check? This helps confirm if the problem is with the game itself. Are your RAM settings set to XMP? It's possible 9900K won't reach 3600 MHz, maybe around 3200 MHz.
Our performance stays between 90-120 FPS, which is both enjoyable and normal. These drops aren’t unusual—they’re anticipated and not indicative of low performance. There’s no point in aiming for rock steady FPS numbers; games aren’t built that way. My suggestion would be to keep playing.
use hwmonitor to verify your temperatures, which could indicate thermal throttling
