When you press the start or windows button, all apps appear. There’s another way to exit besides clicking the desktop app. In full screen or Steam, you can switch directly to the main desktop without opening an apps window. With Windows 8.1, plugging in your headphones or speakers doesn’t work as expected—check the settings for audio options.

Windows 8.1 features the Modern UI, which appears when you press the Start button. This is referred to as Microsoft's Start Screen.

A four-pole adapter is needed for this, as most headphone jacks only support three.

To exit the modern interface or transition to full-screen apps, position your mouse at the top-left corner and click. You may drag the mouse across the top-left and down the left edge to reveal all full-screen applications and select one (similar to workspaces with control+up on OS X, except in Windows 8.1 where only one desktop is available). If you prefer not to use the modern interface entirely, install a free extension such as Classic Start or Start is Back to restore a Windows 7-style start menu. To return to the desktop, click the bottom-right corner of the screen (the right side of the clock in the taskbar) to minimize all windows and access the desktop. Adjust your recording device by right-clicking the speaker icon in the taskbar, selecting Recording Devices, and setting your headphone microphone as the default recording device. Steam depends on this configuration, while applications like Skype allow independent selection of recording and playback devices.

I attempted the right-click speaker feature, but it only displayed my BenQ XL2730z monitor and another device claiming to work fine, regardless of whether my headset or mic was connected. I’m not sure which device is actually active.
