I tried to revert to Windows 8.1, but the system says it’s damaged and missing a file. It suggests using a recovery tool, though I only found one that cost money. Are there any free options available?

Create a Windows 8.1 USB drive, boot from it, and choose the repair option.

My Windows keeps breaking and acting weird, even though it’s my mistake. I had to stop some updates while turning on the laptop—definitely not something I should have done, especially during crunch times like finals. I’m planning to switch to an SSD for my laptop so everything runs smoothly when I copy over the old drive. Updated August 5, 2015 by Aetherslime

It seems there might be an issue with the product key. I attempted to check, but it appears to not be functioning properly.

I’d opt for a clean Windows 10 setup using the restore option. Don’t worry about losing everything—just save your files elsewhere and begin anew. A fresh install pairs perfectly with a new SSD!

When faced with challenges, you can obtain a fresh Windows 8.1 key from Reddit for around $15 and perform a new installation at the provided link.

I encountered the same issue when attempting that action.

I’m really struggling right now. At 17, I can’t access any payment methods they offer, and my parents might not be comfortable with buying me windows that way. Edited August 5, 2015 by Aetherslime
