Well, I'm embarrassed. I'm usually on the "Helping" side of these issues, but now I'm not. I just want to verify my situation and get suggestions. 1. I recently did an upgrade to windows 10. No problems, genuine key I got from school for windows 8, etc etc. 2. Needed to do a system upgrade, which involved swapping the motherboard. 3. Windows is no longer activated (I suspected that would happen). What I didn't expect to see what the fact it could not, and that "it has been blocked". 4. In reading http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...windows-10 I see that I may just need to revert to 8.1 and re-upgrade. So, Number 4 is not wanted, spending the money on a copy of windows is fine with me if absolutely necessary. I figure I'm not currently taking any classes, so, probably should own my own copy anyway. But, I don't want to do that if not necessary. Questions: 1. Is there a number I can call to have my case looked at? I clicked "contact support" and it brings me to " http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/genuine " So helpful! 2. Any idea how long I will have access before getting locked out?

Excited about the responses, similar to our current scenario.

We need at least a month. I believe 3. It’s unclear about 3. Rolling back the update is the simplest option.

After the free-year upgrade ends, can you still replace your mobile with a new one? You won’t be able to do that from W8.1 anymore.

I just attempted it and received a message asking to reinstall the old version and upgrade again. I believe I’ll purchase a key since "re-install" refers to installing version 8, then updating to 8.1, followed by updates and finally version 10 all over once more.

It seems you might be able to perform a fresh installation after upgrading the new monthrboard. But if you later reinstall the motherboard, success is unlikely unless you own a retail version. These issues likely stem from OEM components.

Win10 is now more about digital access rather than a traditional license, making it essentially free as long as you keep your original hardware intact. If you purchase a key, it allows use across devices on the same machine, but if you use a live account, the key might become tied to that specific account.

Install the latest version directly, skip the intermediate step to 8.1.
